About Tea Ceremony

About Tea Ceremony

The Japanese Tea Ceremony is called Chado or Chanoyu in Japanese. It is a Choreographic ritual of preparing and serving green tea with some traditional sweets. It gives you a delight in the balance with the bitter taste of the tea and sweets.
The whole process is not about drinking tea, but is about aesthetics, preparing a bowl of tea with one's whole heart.
The Chado spirit is the spirit of peace, and the culture of Chado is a culture of hospitality. Tea is a means for establishing and maintaining good relations among people.

When you enter the tearoom, you can see a hanging scroll in the alcove. Hanging scrolls play an important role in tea ceremony. Most of scrolls are calligraphic characters. If you want to do calligraphy, you can take Japanese calligraphy lesson at a time.
Some of students taking tea ceremony lesson wear kimono (traditional Japanese costume) when they practice tea ceremony. Most of the movements and components of tea ceremony evolved from the wearing of kimono. If you prefer to wear kimono, please try it all together.
We are expecting your visit. Just relax and enjoy the tea.

1) Learning traditional manners in a tea room (about 10 mins)

In Japan, bowing is essential at meeting, greeting and thanking others.
So at first, we'll practice how to make a bow and how to sit in tatami room. And we'll explain the manners in detail if you wish.

2) Demonstration of the tea ceremony (about 20 mins)

The instructor makes tea for you with explaining the process of making tea.
At first, we purify the utensils before making tea. The acts of purification have spiritual meaning. The host's mind is concentrated by each act of purification.
And then we make tea with purified utensils.

3) Learning way of drinking tea and eating sweet (about 10 mins)

Please eat a Japanese sweet before drinking tea. The bitterness of the tea will be complemented by the taste of the sweet.
At the beginning of your lesson, we explain how to eat a sweet and drink tea.
Before you eat a sweet or drink tea, the tea bowl or plate for sweet is raised slightly to express thanks. And if you use chopsticks for taking sweet, please wipe the tip of chopsticks for next guests. Every tea bowl has a front face. So before you drink tea, turn the tea bowl clockwise twice to avoid its front. At the end of the drink, we are glad to be admired the tea bowl quality.
We hope you give hospitality toward the host, other guests and various utensils.

4) Making tea for yourself with real utensils (about 20 mins)

We used to use the fukusa to purify various utensils. Fukusa is made of silk.
Some of utensils are made of bamboo. A standard type of container for powdered green tea is made of lacquer. You make tea with these utensils.
Maybe you feel a little difficulty to make tea. But the most important thing for making tea is with all your heart. Then it must be delicious!
